SharpSword Films; Emmett\/Furla; IM Global<\/strong><\/th>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Domestic Gross: $7,100,177<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td><strong>Overseas Gross: $16,637,346<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19959 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/silence-2016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/silence-2016.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/bombreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/silence-2016-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bombreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/silence-2016-768x395.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bombreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/silence-2016-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bombreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/silence-2016-348x180.jpg 348w, https:\/\/bombreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/silence-2016-400x206.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><br \/>Martin Scorsese\u2019s decades long passion project <em>Silence<\/em> had numerous financiers and producers come and go over the years and\u00a0even a lawsuit against Scorsese in 2012 for not getting the film off the ground. \u00a0Producer\u00a0Cecchi Gori inked a deal with the director in the 90s, where <em>Silence<\/em> would be his follow up feature to <em>Kundun<\/em> (1997), but it was perpetually postponed. \u00a0After announcing that he would direct <em>The Wolf Of Wall Street<\/em>, Gori filed his suit against the director, claiming he wasted over $750,000 in early development costs. \u00a0The suit was settled in 2014 and no details have been released, but Gori was a credited producer on the film.<\/p>\r\n<p>The project began to actively move forward in 2013 and Graham King was the last piece of baggage attached to <em>Silence<\/em>&#8216;s long history of rights holders and early investors. \u00a0King held the rights and was a lead investor in most Scorsese productions, until he lost nearly $80 million on\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2011-2\/hugo\/\">Hugo<\/a><\/em> and the director and producer severed their relationship. \u00a0King eventually sold back the rights.<\/p>\r\n<p>Randall Emmett of Emmett\/Furla was hired to help organize the financing and the plan was to introduce the project at Cannes in 2013 for pre-sales. \u00a0There was such strong interest in <em>Silence<\/em> from distributors, that even before the Cannes marketplace, $21 million was secured in sales. \u00a0IM Global handled the pre-sales at Cannes, which brokered strong deals in most territories. \u00a0In the summer of 2014, Paramount acquired domestic distribution.<\/p>\r\n<p>In 2013, there were numerous investors and companies funding the picture, but by the time <em>Silence<\/em> was going to begin photography, some had dropped out and minority investors F\u00e1brica de Cine and SharpSword Films, became majority investors. \u00a0Additional funding came from Emmett\/Furla and IM Global.\u00a0 \r\n<span class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"><span class=\"schema-faq-section\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">The budget for Silence<\/strong> was <a class=\"schema-faq-answer\">$46.5 million.<\/a> <\/span> <\/span>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>Paramount dated <em>Silence<\/em> for an awards qualifying run on December 23, 2016. \u00a0It was booked into four locations and pulled in\u00a0$130,880 with a decent\u00a0$32,720 per screen average. \u00a0The studio planned on a January 13, 2017 expansion to most markets and hoped word of mouth would carry the picture, as it would add additional locations the next weekend. \u00a0Reviews were strong for <em>Silence<\/em>, but the non-commercial project struggled in its expansion with general audiences.<\/p>\r\n<p>On the 13th, Paramount increased the theater count to 747 and it bowed against <em>The Bye Bye Man, <a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2017-2\/sleepless\/\">Sleepless<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2017-2\/monster-trucks\/\">Monster Trucks<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(also Paramount)\u00a0and the wide expansions of other Oscar hopefuls\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2016-2\/patriots-day\/\"><em>Patriots Day<\/em><\/a> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2016-2\/live-by-night\/\">Live By Night<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0<em>Silence<\/em> pulled in a troubling\u00a0$1,984,530 &#8212; placing #16 for the weekend. \u00a0<em>Silence<\/em> expanded to 1,580 locations the following weekend with diminishing returns, pulling in just\u00a0$1,166,271. \u00a0After the poor weekend numbers posted, the Academy Award nominations were announced and <em>Silence<\/em> was only recognized for Cinematography. \u00a0It was promptly pulled from most theaters and closed its domestic run with a terrible $7,100,177. \u00a0Paramount would see returned about $3.9 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which barely dents the P&amp;A expenses.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Silence<\/em> was also a non-performer for the many international\u00a0distributors that picked up the title.
