which had co-financed <em>Noah<\/em> with Paramount.\u00a0 Aronofsky became attached to a few projects, one of which was an Evel Knievel biopic at Sony, but he ended up passing on that and he also had a family film setup at New Regency.\u00a0 New Regency eventually passed on that project.\u00a0 Apparently frustrated with getting projects off the ground and the poor state of the planet, he wrote the first draft of <em>mother!<\/em> in five days.\u00a0 He attached an A-list star and this project, which is basically a giant middle finger to its audience, suddenly had life.\u00a0 <em>mother!<\/em> went onto the market for studio bids and while New Regency had the first look option, they did not match Paramount&#8217;s offer and the major studio won the rights to this mid-budget arthouse movie.\u00a0  <span class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\"> <span class=\"schema-faq-section\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">The budget for mother!<\/strong> was <a class=\"schema-faq-answer\">$30 million.<\/a> <\/span> <\/span> <\/p>\r\n<p>Paramount had initially dated <em>mother!<\/em> for October 13, but moved it forward to September 15 to keep it away from <em>Happy Death Day.\u00a0 mother!<\/em> first premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 5 and divided audiences, but ultimately won critical acclaim.\u00a0 Paramount knew they had a controversial picture on their hands, top-lined by a bankable actress and hoped extreme reactions to the movie would spark continued interest at the box office.\u00a0 The studio went ahead with a strong and expensive domestic marketing campaign that was at least the cost of its production budget.\u00a0 The marketing kept the premise shrouded in mystery and despite solid reviews, the film was tracking for an opening just north of $10 million.\u00a0 In a last minute attempt to attract auds, Paramount attached a marketing stunt before the horror smash <em>It<\/em>, where a brief <em>mother!<\/em> ad says: \u201c<em>In one week, in this theater, one movie will mess you up for life\u2026You will never forget where you were the first time you saw\u00a0Mother!\u00a0After the movie, visit the box office to get your tickets.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 It does not appear that many <em>It<\/em> patrons fell for that.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>mother!<\/em> bowed against\u00a0<em>American Assassin<\/em> and both titles would have to compete for box office scraps with the second weekend of <em>It<\/em> claiming most of the market to itself. \u00a0On friday <em>mother!<\/em> pulled in a very soft\u00a0$3,091,084 and general audiences hated the movie so much, it was given a rare F cinemascore &#8212;
