Tri-Star purchased the big screen rights to Joseph Finder&#8217;s <em>High Crimes<\/em> novel for $850,000 before its publication in 1998.\u00a0 The project did not move forward at Sony and <em>High Crimes<\/em> was then optioned by New Regency.\u00a0 New Regency financed with FOX for $42 million and FOX handled global distribution duties.\u00a0 Munich-based Epsilon had a slate investment arrangement at Regency and contributed some coin to the production.<\/p>\n<p>After Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman found success toplining high concept, easily packaged thrillers, both became attached to <em>High Crimes<\/em> in 2000.\u00a0 The two had first worked together on <em>Kiss The Girls<\/em> (1997) and then Judd scored a major hit with <em>Double Jeopardy<\/em> (1999) and Freeman landed a hit with <em>Along Came a Spider<\/em> (2001).\u00a0 After <em>High Crimes<\/em> disappointed at the box office, Judd had one more thriller, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2004-2\/twisted\/\">Twisted<\/a><\/em> (2004) which tanked and ended studio movies built around her.<\/p>\n<p>Director Carl Franklin had made the leap from his acclaimed indie <em>One False Move<\/em> (1992) to helming studio fare, which all bombed.\u00a0 <em>Devil in a Blue Dress<\/em> (1995) and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/1998-2\/one-true-thing\/\">One True Thing<\/a><\/em> (1998) were both commercial failures and Franklin stated he took the <em>High Crimes<\/em> job to do something lighter after his weepy 1998 drama.\u00a0 After his duties on <em>High Crimes<\/em> he pumped out another underperforming high concept thriller <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2003-2\/out-of-time\/\">Out Of Time<\/a><\/em> (2003) and then found himself only being offered more thrillers to direct and instead moved into a successful career in TV.<\/p>\n<p>FOX dated <em>High Crimes<\/em> for April 5, 2002, as this weekend frame had been reserved for generic thrillers for the past two years &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2000-2\/rules-of-engagement\/\"><em>Rules of Engagement<\/em><\/a> in 2000 and <em>Along Came a Spider<\/em> in 2001.\u00a0 Reviews were mixed leaning negative.\u00a0 It bowed against <em>Van Wilder<\/em> and the delayed comedy <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2002-2\/big-trouble\/\">Big Trouble<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 <em>High Crimes<\/em> also had the misfortune of opening one week after another high concept thriller <em>Panic Room<\/em> was released and was dominating the marketplace.<\/p>\n<p><em>High Crimes<\/em> came in below estimates with $14,005,550 &#8212; placing #2 for the weekend led by <em>Panic Room<\/em>, which had taken much of the audience away from <em>Crimes<\/em>.\u00a0 Another thriller entered the market the next weekend <em>Changing Lanes<\/em> and then <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2002-2\/murder-by-numbers\/\">Murder By Numbers<\/a> <\/em>would open the following weekend.\u00a0 With thriller overload at the box office, <em>High Crimes<\/em> closed its stateside run with $41,543,917.<\/p>\n<p><em>High Crimes<\/em> performed poorly overseas and cumed just $22.2M.\u00a0 The worldwide total was $63.7M.\u00a0 FOX would see returned about $35M after theaters take their percentage of the gross &#8212; leaving around half of their
