Stephen King&#8217;s novel was adapted by William Goldman, the man who wrote\u00a0<em>All the President\u2019s Men<\/em>\u00a0and Lawrence Kasdan who made the\u00a0<em>Big Chill<\/em>\u00a0and co-wrote\u00a0<em>The Empire Strikes Back<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 combine their talents to a first act dedicated to scatological humor, then scatological horror and basically all things gas and poo. \u00a0There\u2019s no rational justification for the mess the filmmakers made and trust me, when you see the bathroom set piece covered in blood and shit, it\u2019s a serious mess.\u00a0\u00a0Alien \u2018shit-weasels\u2019 that burrow out of people\u2019s assholes, somehow justified a $68 million budget courtesy of\u00a0Warner Bros, Castle Rock and Village Roadshow, which all evenly contributed to the budget.<\/p>\n<p>The sci-fi\/horror\/buddy film mashup was savaged by critics and dated for March 21, 2003. \u00a0In addition to horrid reviews, poop based horror was difficult to market and also adding to<em> Dreamcatcher<\/em>&#8216;s troubles attracting auds was the Iraq invasion &#8212; which began the day prior to its release and news coverage of the war kept many people at home.\u00a0 To entice viewers, Warner Bros tacked on an animated <em>Matrix<\/em> short <em>Flight of the Osiris<\/em> to the film.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dreamcatcher<\/em> opened in 2,945 theaters against<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2003-2\/view-from-the-top\/\">View From The Top<\/a>, Piglet&#8217;s Big Movie<\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2003-2\/boat-trip\/\">Boat Trip<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and pulled in $15,027,423 &#8212; placing #2 for the slow weekend led by <em>Bringing Down The House<\/em> in its third frame. \u00a0Audiences gave the pic\u00a0a poor C+ cinemascore and the film took a 55.8% nosedive the following weekend to $6,638,459. \u00a0After steep weekly drops, <em>Dreamcatcher<\/em> closed with $33,715,436.<\/p>\n<p>Village Roadshow distributed in their home country Australia to a poor $1,892,168 and their massive profits from the <em>Matrix<\/em> franchise were cut in half from the awful numbers <em>Dreamcatcher, <a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2002-2\/the-adventures-of-pluto-nash\/\">The Adventures Of Pluto Nash<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2002-2\/analyze-that\/\">Analyze That<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2002-2\/eight-legged-freaks\/\">Eight Legged Freaks<\/a><\/em> pulled in. \u00a0Warner Bros distributed in almost every territory, where <em>Dreamcatcher<\/em> pulled in generally poor numbers, totaling $42 million. \u00a0The worldwide cume was $75.7 million and WB would see returned about $41.6 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross &#8212;
