Universal for $150,000 against $400,000 in March 1997.\u00a0 Universal eventually put the project into turnaround and in July 2000, Joe Roth&#8217;s Revolution Studios purchased the rights from Universal for\u00a0seven figures.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<span class=\"schema-faq wp-block-yoast-faq-block\">\r\n<span class=\"schema-faq-section\"><strong class=\"schema-faq-question\">The budget for <em>Stealing Harvard<\/em><\/strong>\r\n<a class=\"schema-faq-answer\">was $25 million, which Revolution financed and they had a financing slate deal with Sony, which would contribute 42.5% of the budget and 100% of the marketing costs.<\/a>\r\n<\/span>\r\n<\/span>\r\n\u00a0 Joe Roth had landed one of the greatest studio deals ever with Sony, who had more to lose on each project than Roth\u2019s Revolution \u2014 and he had originally envisioned his company making filmmaker friendly fare with A-listers and then squandered Revolution\u2019s reserves on mostly lousy movies, like <em>Stealing Harvard<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n<p>After the production encountered too many stipulations with the image conscious Stanford over the use of their name, the movie was shot using a fictitious university &#8212; which somehow confused an audience at a test screening and Revolution required minor reshoots to make the setting an actual University.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a fucking college campus on screen, how was that location confusing?\u00a0 No suspension of disbelief required.\u00a0 Some reshoots and audio dubbing were done to placate the world&#8217;s dumbest test audience and the setting was changed to Harvard.\u00a0 For obvious reasons, the title was changed to <em>Stealing Harvard<\/em>.\u00a0 Original titles were &#8220;<em>Promises, Promises, Promises<\/em>,\u201d \u201c<em>The Promise<\/em>,\u201d \u201c<em>Stealing U<\/em>,\u201d \u201c<em>Uncle<\/em>,\u201d \u201c<em>Say Uncle<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>Stealing Stanford<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sony first dated the picture for August 16 and then moved it to October 11 and finally September 13. \u00a0After seven titles and three release dates, <em>Stealing Harvard<\/em> opened against\u00a0the comedy <em>Barbershop<\/em> and received awful reviews. \u00a0It placed #5 for the weekend with a poor\u00a0$6,041,521 in 2,366 theaters. \u00a0Audiences didn&#8217;t find much\u00a0funny in<em> Stealing Harvard<\/em> and gave the film a miserable C\u00a0cinemascore and it declined 45.3% to\u00a0$3,303,778 in its second frame. \u00a0The movie sank 54.9% in its third session to\u00a0$1,488,770 and the domestic run closed with only $14,036,406. \u00a0Sony would see returned\u00a0about $7.7 million after theaters take their percentage of the gross, which does not cover much of the P&amp;A spend. \u00a0Revolution Studios took a $10 million loss on the film. \u00a0After a strong quarter of films, in a Sony <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.com\/en_us\/SCA\/company-news\/press-releases\/sony-corporation-of-america\/2002\/consolidated-financial-results-for-the-second-quar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial report<\/a>\u00a0they cited the <strong>&#8216;disappointing U.S. box office performance of <a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2002-2\/stuart-little-2\/\">Stuart Little 2<\/a>, Stealing Harvard and <a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2002-2\/trapped\/\">Trapped<\/a>&#8216;<\/strong> as eating into their profits.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Stealing Harvard<\/em> was dumped straight to video in almost every overseas market and grossed a mere $240,626 across a few countries. \u00a0Tom Green&#8217;s studio days were over after this tanked, which was released a year after his fiasco <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bombreport.com\/yearly-breakdowns\/2001-2\/freddy-got-fingered\/\">Freddy Got Fingered<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Genre(s): Comedy Directed
