What to Watch

‘Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace’

Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is one of the most brilliant British comedy series ever made — and it never stops being hilariously funny! Matthew Holness plays the titular “author, dream weaver, visionary, plus actor” Garth Marenghi, a sendup of pretentious genre writers who use their work to express their narcissism above all else. According to Marenghi, he and his cohort created a series called Darkplace in the ’80s, which had hitherto been buried in all TV markets, save for Peru. Channel 4 “allowed” Marenghi to present six episodes in 2004 to staunch up holes in the schedule. Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace is a sharply-written satire of horror, fantasy, publishing, and camp television drama. It also features a who’s who of later British comedy powerhouses, like Richard Ayoade and Matt Berry. Whether you’re new to the show or revisiting your fave episodes, it’s always a good idea to visit Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace.
