Icons' night? But of course! By William Keck, USA TODAY
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. At Tuesday's 12th annual Premiere Women in Hollywood gala (airing Oct. 2, 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC), honorees Laura Linney, Rachel Weisz and Lindsay Lohan lavished heavy praise on co-honoree Shirley MacLaine. So by the time Charlize Theron got up on stage to accept her statue, the statuesque blonde had to come up with some special way to show MacLaine some love. And did she ever.
"I'm going to kiss your (butt) too — but literally," Theron told a tickled MacLaine. With that, Theron — who attributed her offbeat behavior to painkillers she had been popping for a neck spasm — came down off the stage and planted a kiss on MacLaine's posterior.
MacLaine, who happily stood up to accept Theron's praise, told Theron: "I love having my butt kissed by you. That's the best I've had in 10 years!"
Asked before the show how she felt about being included in a group of such colorful honorees, a dumbfounded MacLaine asked, "Who is being honored?"
We filled her in:
Linney: "Oh, I love her acting," said MacLaine.
Theron: "Excellent."
Weisz: "Oh yes, she's terrific."
Lohan: "Don't know her."
Reese Witherspoon popped up to honor her Legally Blonde costume designer, Sophie de Rakoff. But when Witherspoon entered the Beverly Hilton Ballroom, she made a beeline to someone she has been dying to meet for years — her doppelgänger, Kristin Chenoweth of Broadway's Wicked and TV's The West Wing.
"Reese said she was really sad she didn't get to see me do Wicked," said Chenoweth. "All of our friends say we are the other."
Draped in a white beaded Chanel dress, Lohan looked like a Greek goddess, and is even in talks to shoot a film in Greece. "It's very '60s mod," observed Chenoweth of Lohan's look. "She looks very sophisticated tonight."
Guest Jane Seymour said that at Sunday's Emmys, she ran into her Wedding Crashers screenwriter, Steve Faber, who told her he is working on a sequel that would include the actress.
On the red carpet before the Premiere gala, Theron said she spent all day Monday shooting a scene for her five-episode story arc on Fox's Arrested Development. Theron describes her character, who makes her debut on the show next week, as "a very unique girl, a free spirit. I see all the beauty and childlike innocence in life."
Malcolm in the Middle's Jane Kaczmarek also was on hand, and she gave an update on the Emmy dresses that are up for auction on her charity site, www.clothesoffourback.org. Among items up for bid: the gowns of Theron, Ellen Pompeo, Marg Helgenberger, Sela Ward and Felicity Huffman.
What about the other gem-colored dresses worn by Huffman's fellow Desperate Housewives? Kaczmarek said, "I'll be surprised if we get those. Some designers aren't familiar with us yet. ... But we're working on them!"
