Critics Consensus

Some filmgoers may be surprised by the Farrellys' defense of traditional domestic values in Hall Pass -- unfortunately, they'll probably also be dismayed by the absence of laughs.

The joke is supposed to be that it's sad to see these guys so desperate for a lay, but in truth, it's even sadder to see the brothers this desperate for a laugh.

The runtime feels like three hours, probably because the Farrellys stretch out a simple premise for about an hour and twenty minutes too long.

Hall Pass ends up being an inverted sermon, dissuading the married public from going hunting themselves. [Full review in Spanish]

If only "Hall Pass" were a TV pilot that kept the pace of Rick and Fred’s first two days of freedom; running eight minutes, there would only be 20 left of what would likely be the only episode to air. You will not provide your own laugh track.

This is just light comedy, otherwise it doesn’t offer much.

I watched this and instantly forgot I'd seen it. Very little comedy, but a useful reminder for any guys going through a midlif e crisis.

This movie is kind of stupid all around. It’s got a couple of laughable moments, but other than that, it’s one of those movies where the directors think throwing in a naked man or woman will make it better. It’s also just a really misogynistic film that talks about women in such a vulgar way that it makes you wonder what they were thinking when they wrote this.

Hall Pass is a midlife crisis with a hall pass, a bad haircut, and absolutely no survival instincts. Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis stumble through their newfound freedom like two teenagers who just discovered adulthood has consequences. Crude, ridiculous, and surprisingly tender, it’s a comedy about wanting what you don’t have, and discovering that what you already have might be the whole damn point.

It’s a decent movie. There was some funny dialogue through the runtime. It is a taboo subject and can start some interesting debates. Character development was pretty generic and overall a decent watch on a casual weekend.
