Critics Consensus

Gone is Depp's unpredictability and much of the humor and originality of the first movie.

David Ansen Newsweek Mar 14, 2018
The result is an overproduced movie that tries so strenuously hard to be "fun" that it's a chore to sit through. For all its razzle-dazzle production values, the story itself feels cluttered, hard to follow and hard to care about Go to Full Review

Dead Man's Chest is simply something we've been missing most of this entire summer - a film that's truly alive. Go to Full Review

Although the previous film ended rather resolutely, there's no denying that the further tales of Jack Sparrow are significantly suitable affairs for cinematic realization. Go to Full Review

A loose film, which certainly does not offer what it promises. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Moses T @RT95210156 11 hrs ago Gore Verbinski somehow manages to make a sequel that is bigger, darker, and arguably as entertaining as its predecessor, but in a different way. Johnny Depp is once again phenomenal as Jack Sparrow, and Bill Nighy’s Davy Jones is one of the greatest movie villains of the 2000s. The visual effects are absolutely astonishing, particularly the way Jones and his crew are brought to life. Nearly twenty years later, the CGI still holds up remarkably well. Davy Jones looks less like a computer-generated character and more like something that crawled out of the deepest, darkest corner of the ocean. But what really makes this film work is that it never loses its sense of fun. It can be genuinely creepy one moment and absolutely ridiculous the next, and somehow it all fits. The three-way sword fight is one of the most entertaining action sequences I've ever seen, and that ending? Criminal. A fantastic adventure film and one of the best sequels ever made. See more

Huntin P @PaxVobiscum80 Sep 28, 2026 Easily the best of the bloated Pirates franchise. Funnier than the first movie, with better set pieces and far better music. Better special effetcs too. Keira Knightley vacillates between competent and comically inept - her performance in the third film is stunningly inept - but she's cute. Can we really believe that Will, who spent his entire life learning to fence, has taught Elisabeth to be just as good at swordplay in a matter of, what, months? Just days? What's one more bit of fanciful insanity, I guess. Delightful roles for Bill Nighy and Naomi Harris. Johnny Depp does his usual shtick, which some love and others hate. Very enjoyable yo-ho-ho scallywaggery. See more
