Set in the 1990s at the same William Penn Academy formerly attended by "The Goldbergs," "Schooled" follows Principal John Glascott as he leads a faculty of teachers with wildly different views on how to mentor students -- including graduate Lainey Lewis, coach Mellor and enthusiastic super-teacher Charlie Brown, or CB for short. Glascott's nurturing and communicative approach to caring for children is particularly at odds with coach Mellor's tough-guy belief that physical competition brings out the best in students.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Schooled's freshman outing struggles to differentiate itself from its predecessor -- though its sweetly silly sensibilities and stellar cast may be enough for viewers looking for a good-natured sitcom.

There is an overall sweetness to the pilot that suggests "Schooled" could become a good-natured ensemble workplace sitcom like "Parks & Recreation." But the cast needs filling out first. Go to Full Review Daniel D'Addario Variety Feb 13, 2019
"Schooled" may well relax as it goes on, but its first episode feels painfully strained, pushing us first to see Lainey as humorously unfit for her job and, within 20 minutes, perhaps better-suited than anyone could have predicted. Go to Full Review Hanh Nguyen IndieWire Jan 17, 2019

As it stands, Schooled doesn't offer any convincing reasons to watch other than the crossovers from an already familiar world. Go to Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba Apr 17, 2019

To be honest, I have come to prefer the '90s spin-off of The Goldbergs to The Goldbergs itself. It's family-oriented, and very much has the throwback feel of a '90s sitcom with valuable lessons learned in each episode. Go to Full Review Vlada Gelman TV Line Feb 13, 2019
As for what the Goldbergs clan is up to in the future, we don't get a lot of hints. But a fun throwaway gag reveals that classmate Johnny Atkins is now the school janitor, which feels right. Go to Full Review Ed Bark Uncle Barky Feb 13, 2019

There's possibly some potential here. But the only episode of Schooled made available for review neither rings the bell -- or answers it. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

See more Mar 14, 2019 I loved this show! It gives you a real sense of nastgia for us who grew up in the 90s. I think its awesome that they decided to utilize Laney as the lead character, who was amazing on Goldbergs, she doing a terrific job keeping the show in the the rehlm of GOLDBERGS, while also making the show its own. Shes was always too strong to be a secondary character. Laneys relationships with Coach Meller, Chinas and the principle, played by an iconic Tim meadows, all comes together seemlessly to creat an awesome and comfortable network feel good and family friendly comedy.
