Best Horror TV Shows of All Time
A week after seasons 1 to 3 of the horror series From hit Netflix, all three appeared in the United States’s top 10 most-watched shows on the platform. The show is set in an unnamed town in the United States that traps all who enter, but if that doesn’t sound scary enough, the surrounding forest is inhabited by creatures who will kill you if you go outside at night. But where does From rank against the best best horror TV of all time?
Any connoisseur will tell you the horror genre is large. Sometimes, genres blend, like in Widow’s Bay, a show about a cursed island that is also, according to the Emmys, a comedy. Horror dabbles with star-crossed romance in HBO’s True Blood and even takes a stab at social commentary through the FX anthology American Horror Story. Sometimes, different cultures bring their own take on the genre — South Korea’s Kingdom, India’s Ghoul, and Germany’s Dark are among the many other international scary shows represented in this list. Other times, iconic shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Twilight Zone spawn spin-offs, adding layers and franchises to the genre.
To rank the scary TV shows in this monster list, we took the critics’ Tomatometer score into consideration, including shows with at least 15 reviews to ensure we’re dealing with reputably spooky stuff. Plus, we consulted the rankings of a number of reputable “best of” lists and applied some editorial discretion, asking ourselves which horror TV series have stood the test of time, inspired spin-offs and copycats, and even made their influence known on the big screen. We also had a look at the Popcornmeter scores on each of the series.
