I’m planning to install WP 7.1.5 but its specs say “Recommend PHP 8.3 or greater and MySQL version 8.0 or MariaDB version 10.11 or greater.” Will it do OK with PHP 8.2?

The MariaDB version is OK, but I can only upgrade PHP to 8.2 at this time. I am setting up a sandbox on a different domain than where I plan to migrate the site to because when I tried to set it up on the domain it is going to be on, PHP8.2 broke the existing theme and so I am using a different domain for setup.

Ordinarily I could do all this with an edit of the CSS but noO0o. I see that WP doesn’t want much CSS so I need a sandbox while I figure out how to use blocks.

    Help?

Yes, 8.2 is fine. “Recommended” isn’t “required,” and the WordPress requirements page says outright that it still runs on PHP 7.4 and up. Check readme.html in the download if you want the exact minimum for that version.

The bit I’d worry about instead (if i was to worry): PHP 8.2 breaking your existing theme means that theme is unmaintained. That’s true regardless of which WordPress version you run, so it’s the real work in this migration.

Also, WordPress hasn’t stopped wanting CSS. Block themes moved it. Appearance → Editor → Styles for the visual controls, Additional CSS for hand-written rules, theme.json for site-wide settings. Different filing system, same amount of CSS.

Thank you This Is My URL,

I had seen in the readme that it should be fine, I just wanted to be sure before setting it all up. I appreciate the details you’ve shared, I did look at the 2025 CSS stylesheets, but did not look at theme.json, so that is a big help too.

The theme that broke on PHP8.1 is a paid theme and I never received any communications from them since the last update, but yes, the site was set up in 2017 and had received theme updates, but not for awhile so I thought it best to update before customizing another theme. It’s my husband’s site so I’m not getting paid, just want to avoid catastrophes when I can. It has been dormant for a long time, now he wants to get it going again. Thank you!
