Critics Consensus

Some of the evil magic is gone as this trilogy capper dispenses with most of the scares, but Bruce Campbell's hammy charm and Sam Raimi's homage to classic visual effects make for a fun enough adventure.

Blending almost nonstop violence with humorous parody, Sam Raimi’s latest excursion into horror-kitsch should prove a crowd-pleaser for the mall trade and perhaps a mite beyond.

Replete with thumping horse hooves, the battle cries of lusty men and the banshee screams of the living dead, Raimi's movie comes at you with a noisy, jokey swagger. Its hero even says "groovy" and gets away with it.

Here's the problem: Bruce Campbell's character is a complete stiff, and so is everyone else he meets who isn't a special effect. The result is that we couldn't care less who wins any battle in the movie no matter how inventively photographed.

"Army of Darkness" features the outlandish, unrealistic fighting style that would be adored in "Xena: The Warrior Princess."

As the second sequel to his classic Evil Dead, however, it's a vapid exercise in watered-down horror kitsch that betrays the whole ethos of the sublime original.

Despite abandoning the horror elements of its predecessors, it's still an entertaining showcase for Bruce Campbell's comedic chops and physical prowess.

5/10. 52/100 Originally watched with my Dad and Ryan I think several years ago at home. Rewatched with Willy during October at home. Willy: 5/10 “Got funny aspects and parts pretty decent. But I don’t see myself ever watching it again.”

Who Wants Some I love this movie, but I think it's extremely overrated. I really like that they went in a different direction so these movies don't become derivative, but going from modern horror to fantasy horror is such a strange transition. That said, the comedy lands. It reminds me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail with all the slapstick humor. This just doesn't feel like an Evil Dead movie. If you told me Sam Raimi made a medieval horror comedy, I'd believe you, but it's weird seeing this as an Evil Dead sequel. I still like it a lot and will always watch it during my Evil Dead marathons. I also can't ignore that this dude uses a belt like a whip, the chainsaw somehow never runs out of gas, and Ash never runs out of shotgun ammo. I love the production design, especially the graveyard where the Necronomicon is found. The Army of Darkness and Deadites look great, and the medieval costumes are awesome. Overall, I really like this movie, just not as an Evil Dead movie.
