About
The mission of the Flatiron Institute is to advance scientific research through computational methods, including data analysis, theory, modeling and simulation.
The institute, an internal research division of the Simons Foundation, is a community of scientists who are working to use modern computational tools to advance our understanding of science, both through the analysis of large, rich datasets and through the simulations of physical processes.
Our Flatiron Institute was opened in 2016 and conducts scientific research in-house, supporting teams of top computational scientists.
The Simons Foundation’s mission is to advance the frontiers of research in mathematics and the basic sciences.
Since its founding in 1994 by Jim and Marilyn Simons, the foundation has championed basic science through grantmaking, in-house research and public engagement. We believe in asking big questions and providing sustained support to researchers working to unravel the mysteries of the universe.
The foundation makes grants across four areas: Mathematics & Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Autism & Neuroscience, and Science, Society & Culture.
The Flatiron Institute, established in 2016, extends this mission through in-house research, bringing together computational scientists to tackle challenging scientific problems.
We foster collaboration across disciplines and institutions and encourage the open exchange of ideas and knowledge within the scientific community.
We also create opportunities for people to engage with science in relevant and meaningful ways, recognizing that science is inseparable from society and culture.
The Simons Foundation is a private foundation based in New York City, with more than 500 employees, about half of whom are scientists. David Spergel has served as president since 2021.
The foundation is governed by its board of trustees, chaired by Marilyn Simons.
